Our Mission and Vision
The Spiritan International School of Theology (SIST) Attakwu, Enugu, was
established in 1987 by the Holy Ghost Fathers and Brothers (Spiritans)
of the Union of Circumscriptions of Anglophone West African region
(UCAWA).
Its aim is principally the priestly formation of Spiritan
religious missionaries and other missionaries belonging to clerical
institutes. SIST belongs to a missionary congregation dedicated to the
service of the
poor and the disadvantaged peoples of the world.
Therefore its do such an apostolate in the changing situations of the
world mission.
Spiritans have been very much part of Africa's ecclesial,
social
and educational past and present. It is in the continuation of
this Spiritan tradition that SIST was also established to ensure that
the formation of clerical students is closely linked to the theological
educational
of the religious (men and women) and the laity. The
theological education of the laity and religious forms an integral part
of SIST as enshrined in this Statutes. SIST Governing Council took the
decision that as
from the 1996/1997 academic session
SIST will run an integrated programme whereby qualified
religious and laity will study theology side by side with our clerical
students. This corresponds to the expressed
desire of the 1994 African
Synod.
Africa is changing rapidly. And as in all changes, there are
enormous challenges and opportunities. There is a need for continuing
discernment in order to determine
what God is calling the Churches in
Africa to do and to become. Spiritans want to contribute to this search
for the will of God in Africa and the wider world. All courses taught in
SIST reflect the mind of Vatican
Council II by making theological
formation respond to the sign of the times. Therefore theology in SIST
is missionary and ecumenical in orientation. We pay close attention to
cultural varieties and to the pains
and groans of the oppressed peoples
of the world.
